Truckload vs. LTL: Which fits your shipment?

By Navigator Global USA

Choosing a freight service starts with what the shipment needs. Pallet count, dimensions, weight, handling instructions, pickup and delivery requirements, and timing all help determine which option deserves a closer look.

Start with trailer space and handling

Truckload service reserves a trailer for one shipper's freight. Less-than-truckload, or LTL, combines smaller shipments in shared trailer space. LTL shipments may pass through terminals and be transferred along the route; dedicated truckload movements generally involve fewer transfers. The actual service plan should be confirmed for your shipment. These basic distinctions are described in FedEx's explanation of truckload and LTL.

Compare the requirements for your shipment

  • Space and weight: Provide the dimensions and loaded weight of each unit alongside the total pallet count.
  • Handling: Identify fragile goods, irregular shapes, stacking restrictions, and any need for dedicated space.
  • Timing: Share the pickup window, required delivery date, and receiving hours before requesting a quote.
  • Facilities: Confirm docks, forklifts, liftgate needs, appointments, and access restrictions at both ends.
  • Temperature: State the required range in °F and handling instructions so suitable equipment can be reviewed.
  • Price and terms: Compare quotes using the same shipment details and requested services.

Three situations to think through

A few standard pallets going to a business with a loading dock. Begin by asking about LTL. Provide the measurements, weight, commodity, and receiving requirements so the quote reflects the actual shipment.

Freight that needs its own trailer. Request a truckload review and explain why dedicated space is needed. Include any loading restrictions, equipment specifications, or temperature requirements.

An awkward shipment with a firm delivery deadline. Do not choose a service from pallet count alone. Share the full dimensions, handling constraints, and deadline, then discuss the options and the service commitments available for that route.

These are starting points for a conversation, not automatic booking rules. Your shipment details and available service determine the final recommendation.

Compare complete quotes

Before accepting a quote, review the equipment or service, pickup arrangements, delivery expectations, known additional charges, and payment terms. Confirm that each quote uses the same commodity, measurements, and requested services. Ask what assumptions could require the price to be reviewed.

If something changes before pickup, such as a larger pallet, another stop, or a different receiving location, share the change before the freight moves.
